This intensive is designed to bring together the Club, Street and Jazz dance communities to intentionally explore their shared movements, history, and culture. We’re bringing in instructors from across the continent that are experts in the intersection of these art forms, so don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!
Schedule
Moncell Durden is a dance educator, choreographer, ethnographer, embodied historian, author and associate professor of practice at the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman International School of Dance. He specializes in pedagogical practices that prove cultural and historical context in what he calls the morphology of Afro-kinetic memory.
Raoul Wilke is is currently Faculty at Ryerson Dance School, educating students on these vernacular dance forms that helped shape him into the man he is today. As a student of dance, he continues to live by the quote, “ See the music, Hear the Dance” by Balanchine.
Nathan Bugh is one of the world's leading exponents of Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz dance. His stage appearances include: Carnegie Hall (Swing Swing Swing w/ New York Pops), The Apollo Theater (Swingin’ Frankie’s Way), and Jacob’s Pillow (Earthbeat!, More Forever, SW!NG OUT).

A la carte lunch food will be available for purchase at the venue, so you can easily buy and eat your lunch while attending Moncell’s talk.
All That Jazz Contest
Finals will ~9:45pm during the first band break on Sunday, Dec 29th. Check in at 9:30pm.
We’re honored to carry on this contest tradition from its first home at Montreal Swing Riot, to its second home at Lindy Bout, and now its third home at Stormy Weather.
Open to all levels. This is a solo dance contest.
Prelims Format: Everyone will dance at the same time (aka all-skate). Judged by panel. Finalists announced by 9pm.
Finals format: Warm-up all skate, 2 dancers out at at a time for ~1min rounds twice through, final all skate. Judged by panel and scored after the contest. Winners announced around 10:45pm.
Be prepared to dance to a variety of jazz and jazz-adjacent musical styles with varying tempos. Potential styles include but are not limited to: Swing, Blues, BeBop, Latin Jazz, Jazz House, and Jazz Fusion.
Entry Fee: $20/person

Social Dancing
From 9pm-3am, there will be social dancing to live jazz bands. You can expect to see a lot of Lindy Hop as well as solo Jazz dance and cyphers. We encourage everyone to participate and dance in whatever style you prefer.
